Here’s a recipe that kids just love. It’s weird, squishy and it produces a tasty, nutritious breakfast treat! It also lets kids have (a bit of) control over what they eat, which can be quite empowering for a little one—especially if he or she is a picky eater. One note of caution: this recipe does involve boiling water, so make sure an adult is available to do that part.
So, on with the show…you’re about to make “baglets” – omelets in a bag!
- 2 eggs
- 1 tablespoon Hiland Dairy Milk
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Diced ham
- Hiland Dairy Cheese (Mozzarella, Mexican Blend, Italian Blend, Mild Cheddar, Colby Jack)
- Diced green pepper
- Tip: You can cook the green pepper ahead of time or leave it raw – whichever you prefer.
- Tomato salsa
- Sliced mushrooms (cooked ahead of time)
Boil water in a large pot. Tip: Leave enough room so the pot won’t overflow when the “baglet” is submerged in the water. Have your child start by writing his or her name on a quart-sized freezer bag with a waterproof marker.
Then crack the eggs into the bag and add milk, salt and pepper. Shake the bag to “mix” the eggs.
Once the eggs form a consistent yellow liquid, open the bag and add filling ingredients of choice. Tip: Choose from the list of filling ingredients above or add your own. Its a good idea to cook the filling ingredients ahead of time unless they are meant to be eaten raw (apart from the cheeses, they will melt as the “baglet” cooks). After the filling ingredients have been put into the bag with the egg mixture, have your child carefully press out as much of the remaining air as possible and seal the bag. This is where an adult will need to step in. Using a pair of tongs, lower the bag into the boiling water and let it cook for 11-13 minutes.
When time is up, remove the “baglet” from the boiling water, once again using your tongs. Set it on the counter to cool for a few minutes. After the bag has cooled off a bit, open it up and let the contents roll onto your child’s plate and watch them enjoy!
