Hiland Home Lifehack: Dairy Substitutes

Does your recipe call for a dairy product you don’t have on hand?

So you’ve got friends coming over for dinner. You’ve found a recipe online that looks amazing, but… it calls for buttermilk. You’ve got pots simmering on the stove and you can’t run out to the store to buy some, so what do you do?

Well, if you’ve got some milk in your fridge and lemon juice or vinegar, you’re good to go. Or what if you need heavy cream? Well, if you’ve got milk and butter, you’ve got that covered too.

Actually, you might be surprised, but if you’ve got milk, cream and yogurt (or even just milk), you can create substitutes for many missing dairy ingredients.
